What is Bioidential Hormones Replacement Therapy (BHRT)?Bioidentical hormone are derived from plants such as soy and Mexican wild yam which contain an active ingredient called Disogenin. Disogenin is similar in structure to cholesterol. By using different extraction processes, disogenin can be converted to synthesize bioidentical hormones such as Progesterone, Pregnenolone, Estradiol, Estriol, Testosterone,Thyroxine, DHEA, Melatonin etc. The chemical structure of BHRT is biologically identical to human hormones. Therefore, these molecules are better able to mimic natural biological processes. Taking bioidentical hormones, which are very similar in structure to what the body produces, is the best way to replace hormones safely.

What are the benefits of BHRT?BHRT make the aging process and its stages more enjoyable and graceful. It’s the backbone to optimal health, longevity and better quality of life. BHRT is the safest way to replace depleted or declining hormones. The world of medicine is evolving, and it is very obvious that conservative treatment is disease-based; most treatment is geared to reducing symptoms but not solving the problem within. Functional medicine aims to prevent disease and to treat the root cause of the disease. Studies have shown that proper replacement of Bioidentical Hormones along with healthy lifestyle choices and abiding by proper nutrition holds great promise in slowing the aging process. This approach also serves as an effective platform of treatment for chronic disease and age-related health issues.

How do we know which and how much hormones to take? This can only be determined after the patient goes through a detailed history taking, physical examination and series of hormonal tests. After reviewing the results, hormones are then prescribed by a doctor who is trained and qualified in this field. A compounding pharmacy then prepares the customized hormones based on the doctor’s prescription. This prescription is tailored especially for that individual patient; the aim of treatment is to replenish depleted hormone levels and to remove hormonal imbalances. Every person is different; therefore, everyone needs specific doses customized to their unique requirements.

How does one consume BHRT?Different hormones are effective in different forms. Some may be taken orally in capsule form; such as Thyroxine, Progesterone, Melatonin, Dhea and HCT. Hormones such as Testosterone and especially Estrogen, work far better when applied topically/transdermally in a gel or cream form. This preparation is then directly absorbed into the blood stream and by-passes the liver. This avoids the production of harmful metabolites by the liver. Do note that applying topical yam or soy types of health creams will not give the same results as bio identical hormones for the body is not equipped to convert the cream into hormones.

Are there any side effects ?Bioidentical hormones are just like the hormones that our bodies synthesize. Therefore, they are easily recognized and utilized. Their effects on the body’s systems are more physiological and consistent with our normal biochemistry. At optimal dosing, there is less chance of unpleasant side effects that tend to occur with the usage of synthetic hormones. Nevertheless, regular blood monitoring is advised every 2-3 months when just commencing treatment. Once dosing is optimized, levels ought to be monitored every 6 months once a stable dose is achieved. With regard to reproductive health, an annual mammogram and pap smear are recommended for the ladies. For men, PSA levels and a prostate examination is recommended every 6 months.

How does Functional Medicine work?Functional Medicine is the science of creating health by treating the whole system and focusing on root causes, not just the symptoms. Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine physicians spend time with their patients; listening to their histories, mapping their personal timeline and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex chronic diseases. After taking an extensive medical history and reviewing daily dietary choices, we run the appropriate medical tests to identify the root cause of chronic health issues. By changing the disease-centered focus of medical practice to this more holistic patient-centered approach, which is founded in medicine and biology, our physicians are able to support the healing process by viewing both health and illness as part of a cycle in which all components of the human biological system interact dynamically with the environment.

How much will a Functional Medicine Program cost?Functional Medicine is not just for the wealthy; most of our patients belong to the working class. We know everyone desires to get healthy and feel great. However, we do not accept every patient. We only take on patients whose overall health we believe we can improve. The selection process starts with a preliminary consultation. If you are deemed suitable for the treatment program, the price of your treatment will depend on several factors. These include the complexity of your condition, the extent of lab testing required, the combination of natural medicines, the other therapies required during treatment, and the number of consultations you may require. We do everything we possibly can to make Functional Medicine affordable to the average person. Again, most, if not all of our patients, are average working class people who want to improve their health.

How can I find out if I am a suitable candidate for your treatment program? The best way to determine if our program is suitable for you is to schedule an initial free consultation. This gives us an opportunity to learn more about your goals and needs, and gives you the chance to ask us any questions you might have. Do note that there is no obligation. From this point, we can find out if a full Functional Medicine consultation with me is the right option for you. During the comprehensive consultation, we shall go over your detailed health history. Any past lab investigations would already have been submitted prior to this comprehensive consultation for a full review. From here, we shall decide together if the treatment program is suitable for you. If it is, in what capacity? We are passionate about practicing Functional Medicine and care deeply for our patients. During the course of their treatment with us, our patients tend to become our friends, and even family members to us. We are humbled and honored to be a part of their journey to optimal health.

How long will my treatment take? This depends on several factors such as the complexity of your condition, how long you have had it, how much time, energy and attention you are willing to devote to treatment, and how well you respond to treatment. In general, health programs for chronic illnesses last between six and twelve months, but most patients start seeing improvement within the first month. Patients may elect to continue with a maintenance program after their initial treatment plan is finished.
